ROUTES TO FREEDOM
A Handbook of Discussion Topics for 2007
In Routes to Freedom, with its slightly punning title, we have taken
a long view of those experiences which feed our fears, and contrasted them
with the things that remind us of the value of the freedoms we have achieved.
Despite the deep shadow that terrorism casts over us, there are many causes
for optimism arising from the richness of our long established culture. We
hope that the topicality of these studies will stimulate lively discussion
and encourage some re-positioning of your views on current events.
It may be time now to change the emphasis on our individual rights
as opposed to our social rights; to seek a context which gives equal
weight to the sense of responsibility that our social cohesion requires. Certain
sub-texts, like undercurrents, run through these studies. Our freedoms
constantly require protection from arbitary powers, especially those that
stifle expression. Many of the studies carry, by implication, an account of
the scope of governance and touch upon the extent of our relationships
with people from other parts of the world. If we are to try to impose our
values so forcefully on other countries, then we must at least live by them
in our own.
It is refreshing to complete this overall theme with an appreciation of what
we do have which still gives us that emotional lift that we call 'a sense
of freedom'. This book has been designed to draw attention to some of the
several ways by which we keep open our Routes to Freedom.
